QUALITY GENETICS KEY TO FLOCK RETURNS

Thursday, 14 June 2007

Quality genetics are the most profitable way to improve flock flexibility.

Firstly, you must assess the genetic quality of your flock and then identify genetics that will enhance this. It is more about the breeder you choose than the individual rams.

If you choose a progressive breeder who is making good genetic progress then most of the rams they produce will enhance your flock. Choosing genetics to fit your system is also crucial to the profitability of your enterprise.

You need to consider:
The most appropriate micron for your type of country and the markets you want to supply

Staple length and wool quality criteria

The mature size of the ewe you want to run

The importance of fertility

If you use genetics to increase the number of ewes conceiving and rearing twins to weaning by 15-20% from a base of 100% weaned, it will increase the number of lambs weaned by 15-20 per 100 ewes. Trials show this is very possible without compromising the quality of the lamb or volume of wool produced.

When this is achieved the amount of lamb produced per kg can be lifted 15% and the amount of wool produced 10%.

There is a marginal increase in the amount of feed required to feed the higher performing sheep, but the net result is a clear increase in gross margin per hectare.
